In the Beginning
Tony Horwitz, author of Baghdad Without a Map, will be speaking to our school in the spring. I decided to read the book with my sophomores not only to make Horwitz's visit more meaningful for all of us, but to make us all more educated citizens of the world. The conflict in the Middle East, whether Iraq, Iran or Israel, seems overwhelmingly complicated and oh-so "foreign." But every day young Americans are sacrificing their lives as innocent Iraqi mothers and children die. I fear that we are becoming immune to the complexity of the region and the war. The least I can do is build my understanding of the Middle East. Hopefully, as my students and I read and blog together, we will also learn together.
